I believe everyone in the Woodie Family knows Cheryl Luchsinger. If not, she is the lady that every year makes a quilt for the raffle on Saturday night at Woodies on the Wharf. More than that, she has made quilts for many charities, for out going officers of the Santa Cruz Woodies, for club members newborn, a special quilt that was auctioned to benefit the National Woodie Clubs Scholarship Program and a quilt with every department in San Mateo County made for our training Chief (Daly City Fire} whose daughter lost her life to cancer. What you probably don’t know, she made a quilt for a very special event.

On March 28th, the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation held their 20th Anniversary of “IGNITING HOPE “. This formal Gala, held every two years, helps to bring an awareness to the silent threat to firefighters and their families called Cancer. In the history of the San Francisco Fire Department, more than 400 firefighters have died from the toxic exposures while fighting fires. My son Chris, a San Francisco Firefighter, gathered station T-shirts from across San Francisco and sent them to Cheryl. After hours of work, she created another work of art. Cheryl was able to meet the winning bidder, a female firefighter named Patty Yuen of Station 39, who is close to retiring. Her station was not on the quilt. In typical Cheryl fashion, she asked Patty to send her a shirt from her station, and she would make it quilt ready.
The next time you see Cheryl, let her know what a special person she is.
