Santa Cruz Woodies Travels to Santa Barbara For Woodies at the Beach

Some time ago I noticed ads in the Woodie Times for Santa Barbara Woodie Club’s 25th Annual Woodies at the Beach. Part of the ad was the National Woodie Club holding their 8th Annual Meet in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Club. Needless to say, this looked like an event to participate in so I started passing the word that I planned to attend and soon had fellow Santa Cruz Club members wanting to join in with us. Plans and reservations were made and we were on the road Thursday morning, July 24th.

Gathering together for the ride down Hwy 101 to Santa Barbara was, Tom & Kathy Jones, Rich & Pat Wilson, Loren & Annette Steck, Andre Fonseca, Toni Wilkerson, Kathy Lloyd, Jim & Sue Vickery, Also joining us from Southern California was, Warren & Katie Atwood, John Schaefer & Pat Stumpf. The ride down was uneventful, taking in all the beauty of the central coast.

  • Thursday Night – Meet & greet
  • Friday Morning – Breakfast at Rincon Point
  • Friday Night – Buffet
  • Saturday – Show on the beautiful Santa Barbara City College Campus
  • Saturday Night – National Woodie Club host dinner

Let’s start with Thursday’s meet and greet. It was fun catching up with old friends from the other clubs, sitting around and just having a great time. The pizza went quick forcing a second order to- be placed.

Friday morning it was a 10 minute drive to Rincon Point. Pat and Merry Henry have a fantastic home right on the beach. The hospitality of the Henry’s was great, serving up breakfast to over 150 folks.

Friday afternoon was filled with shopping on State Street and maybe a drink or two.

Back at the Double Tree, an excellent catered Mexican dinner was served by various club members, including Bill and Rosemary Sampson, wearing their WOODIES OFF THE WHARF aprons and hats from Santa Cruz.

Saturday morning and we are off to the show, held at Santa Barbara Junior College . A record number of woodies, about fifty more than any other year. The weather was perfect and the view of the Pacific Ocean was epic. How’s this, of the seven woodies that made the trip, three Santa Cruz club members walked away with trophy hardware.

Awards were given out to three SCW members.

The Stecks were awarded “Best Mopar Woodie
The Wilsons “Best 1940’s Woodie”
The Jones “Best 1950’s Woodie”

While we did not attend the Saturday dinner hosted by the National Woodie Club, we heard it was classic. We decided to take a break from the Woodie crowd and have a great dinner at Lure’s Fish House right across the street. The ride home on Sunday was again uneventful, except for a little traffic generated by the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

A big kudos to the Santa Barbara Woodie Club for an outstanding event. Mark your calendars for next year. It is an event you must experience at least once. The Santa Barbara Woodies Club put together one heck of a program for the weekend.
