Concours on the Avenue Carmel, CA 2014

The Santa Cruz Woodies Club was invited to participate in the 8th annual “Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue”, held during the ten day, Monterey Peninsula’s Collector Car gathering. We met outside of Carmel with five other cars and fellow members of SCWC (President Rowland Baker, Loren Steck and Annette Yee, Joe and Arlene Solis, Dave Welles, Rod Kleman, Mick and Robin Carolan, National Woodie Club (NWC) Western Director Mickey (and JoAnn) Christiason, Jim Cocores, Charles Cross and Monique Gardiner) as well as a handful of other Woodie owners who had agreed to participate in this year’s show. Promptly at 9:45 A.M. we were given the green light to line up for the drive into town. In all 16 Woodies made the beautiful and winding drive past the old Carmel Mission escorted by a cadre of California Highway Patrol officers on motorcycles that blocked off all the intersections, held up cross traffic and led us through red lights and stop signs without coming to a halt.

One of the highlights of the morning was the grand entrance onto Ocean Avenue surrounded by many famous autos already parked on the street as we headed to our numbered parking spots close to the judging podium.

Several of us were lucky enough to be introduced to Wayne Carini, host of the Velocity channel’s “Chasing Classic Cars” who graciously allowed us to intrude on his day for a photo op with the assembled SCW Club members and our Woodie brethren from SoCal. For those of our readers who have never attended the mid-week Carmel Concours I highly recommend it, the event is free to the viewing public, proceeds from the entrant’s fee’s go to charity and it’s a great way to see some remarkable cars up close and personal.
